"I'd rather write a country's songs than its laws."
[paraphrased from Andrew Fletcher, 1703]
"Codecert", A Concert for the Three Laws of Human Augmentation
S. Mann, R. Janzen, and K. Yang, Saturday, Jun 25, 2016.
Tonight's concert
is presented in 3 parts, and symbolizes the structural
elements of the Code of Ethics on Human Augmentation (tweet #HACode).
The Human Augmentation Code has been 14 years in the making and will be
unveiled at Tomorrow's Keynote (9:15am), further developed during the
panel (10am), and you are all invited to participate in its co-authorship
in our "Town Hall" meeting immediately following the panel.
Please join us in writing a Code for the virtual and real worlds, and,
most importantly, the boundaries between real and virtual, that humanity
will inhabit in years to come.
Musical Programme begins 8pm Saturday June 25th:
- Announcement and intro by S. Mann.
- Movement 0: (tweet #HACode0) is a free-form jazz jam played on
hydraulophone
(underwater pipe organ).
S. Mann, R. Janzen, and K. Yang.
- Movement 1: (tweet #HACode1) is a piece entitled
"Liquid Nitrogen -- Infinite Square Well" (S. Mann, 1985),
which is about the Law of Sensory Auditability ("Metaveillance").
We will transition from Movement 0 to 1 without announcement.
See if you can hear when Movement 1 begins, and also feel free to
sing (or play) along, according to the following rules:
- Only the following four notes are ever allowed to be
sounded during the movement: A, A#, E, and F.
The key in which this is played may
be selected arbitrarily, e.g.
C, C#, G, and G#.
Since it will be played on a diatonic hydraulophone,
it will be played on E, F, B, and C.
For simplicity let's refer to the notes as 1, 1#, 5, and 5#.
- Initially, 1 and 1# are sounded together for the first measure.
- Then 5 and 5# are added, keeping all 4 notes sounding for an
additional 2 measures. The 5 and 5# are a perfect fifth above
the 1 and 1# respectively, to symbolize the interplay between
dissonance and consonance of the First Law of Human Augmentation.
- Then the 5# is released for 1 measure, then the 5# is changed to a
5 for the next measure, and a gentle rocking motion is established
back and forth between 5 and 5#, while keeping both 1 and 1# sounding.
- Then 1, 1#, and 5 are sounded while rocking back and forth between
8 and 8# similarly.
- Then 1, 1#, and 5# are sounded while rocking back and forth between
8 and 8# similarly.
- The movement continues along similar patterns,
subject to a set of rules that requires dissonance be
sustained throughout the entire movement, letting up only at the
very end.
There must always be at least two adjacent notes sounding at all
times until the very end.
- The movement concludes on a chord formed by 1, 1#, 5, and 8,
at which time the 1# stops sounding,
revealing the only consonance heard during the entire movement.
The instrument for Movement 1 is a hydraulophone
(underwater pipe organ).
The hydraulophic fluid may be water or liquid nitrogen.
- Movement 2: (tweet #HACode2) is a piece entitled "Adagio for
(PASCO) Fourier Synthesizer and Lock-In Amplifier" (S. Mann 1978),
and is about the Law of Sensory Reciprocity.
It is played primarily on a
PASCO Fourier Synthesizer (a scientific instrument used for teaching
and research purposes at many universities and secondary schools).
The PASCO Fourier Synthesizer can play only one note,
A440 (including its harmonics).
Accordingly, "Adagio for Fourier Synthesizer" is comprised of
essentially the note A440, with the harmonics (timbre) varying throughout
the piece. The piece may be accommpanied with a Lock-In Amplifier and
other instruments. This performance will be done by
S. Mann, R. Janzen, and K. Yang.
- Movement 3: (tweet #HACode3) is a piece entitled "440" (S. Mann, 2008).
It is about the Third Law of Human Augmentation.
It is played on a valve-maintained tuning fork, playing the note A440.
The tuning fork is maintained inside a soundproof enclosure, which is
opened for 4 minutes and 40 seconds, and then closed again.
An much abridged version will be played tonight.
Each movement is more restrictive than the previous one, thus symbolizing the
nested nature of the Three Laws, each Law following from the Law before it.
