Wearable Computing...

AR Vision: WearCam + WearComp + WearDisp

Crazy idea... 35 years ago...
Now a $241 billion industry!...
WearCam™ Vision-based AR

Augmediated Reality comprises 3 elements:
  • Wearable Camera ("WearCam"), connected to a
  • Wearable Computer ("WearComp"), connected to a
  • Wearable Display ("WearDisp").

WearComp + WearDisp is a well-researched field.

But WearCam is not: cameras are always merely added on as an afterthought — zero consideration to the light flow path!!!

"Veillance" and "Vertising" in the "Vironment": New possibilities
MannGlass 1998 (15 years ago):
Nature (human) and Technology (computer) combined!

Thin strip of metal wraps around the head;
No hinges: 1-piece construction.
Gen-4 Glass (Laser EyeTap)
Sleek slender metal frame, in one continuous piece

Conclusions: Principles and Practice

Principles:

  • HI (Humanistic Intelligence)
  • NUI (Natural User Interface, Mann 2001)
  • Theory of Glass (Gen-1 to Gen-5, Mann 2001)
  • Architecture of One: Wearable Computing is Urban Design

Ongoing projects:

  • HDR Imaging Chip: superposimetrics, computational photography
  • Seeing Eye-to-Eye: shared mediated reality, distributed sensing, sousveillant design — imaging, communication, and computation
  • Personal Safety Device + Health: dietary intake, actional systems
