THE BIBLE BELIEVER'S COMMENTARY

JOB CHAPTER TWENTY-NINE

29:1-13 MOREOVER Job continued his parable, and said, Oh that I were as in months past, as in the days when God preserved me; When his candle shined upon my head, and when by his light I walked through darkness; As I was in the days of my youth, when the secret of God was upon my tabernacle; When the Almighty was yet with me, when my children were about me; When I washed my steps with butter, and the rock pured me out rivers of oil; When I went out to the gate through the city, when I prepared my seat in the street! The young men saw me, and hid themselves: and the aged arose, and stood up. The princes refrained talking, and laid their hand on their mouth. The nobles held their peace, and their tongue cleaved to the roof of their mouth. When the ear heard me, then it blessed me; and when the eye saw me, it gave witness to me: Because I delivered the poor that cried, and the fatherless, and him that had none to help him. The blessing of him that was ready to perish came upon me: and I caused the widow's heart to sing for joy.

Job continues his "parable" (v 1), showing that his life runs parallel to the life, or lives, of someone else (see Ps. 78). Chapter 29 is plainly a description of Job's better days when he lived "high n the hog and low on the chicken." Chapter 30 shows what happens when the "rubber touched the highway," so to speak, and Chapter 31 is Job's justification of his moral conduct.

"Oh that I were as in months past..." (v 2). And even though the Holy Spirit tells us that this is an unwise inquiry (Eccl. 7:10), in Job's case it is certainly true. Many of us only pretend that the "good old days" were better (see Exodus 14:12 and comments), but when real disaster strikes and tears us up like it has riven Job, the former state (before the disaster) is always better in our way of thinking. The "old timer" is always a relative term because the "scoobydoobydoo" boys of the 1960s look at the hit tunes from 1950 as "Golden Oldies," and the hit tunes of the 1940s as "oldies but goodies." The truth of the matter is that 1920 is not a long time back, and World War I largely determined the issues being discussed in the Near East by Kissinger (1976) and the Arabs. The "old days" are the days YOU have a hard time remembering. Some of you can remember when the "village SQUARE" was a place, not a person, when the "wonder drugs" were castor oil and mustard plasters, when a "bureau" was a piece of furniture, when people counted blessings instead of calories, when you had to marry a dishwasher--not buy one, when a "Car Wash" was a bucket of soapy water, and when a "crystal set" was a radio receiver.

In the days of "The Shadow," "Burns and Allen," "Allen's Alley," "Backstage Wife," "Vic and Sade," "Ma Perkins," "Renfroe of the Mounted," and Jack Armstrong, a "compact" was what girls used to repair their faces with, and a window sill had a flower box in it instead of an air-conditioner. "On time" meant punctuality--not "time payments," the "red threat" was long winter underwear, "delinquent" was a reference to a library fine, a "trip" meant traveling by train or bus, and a "fix" meant to repair something. (My, my how times have changed! Terminology is "somethin' else," as they say down home.)

When Blake, Weigle, and Buttrick of the NCCC tell us that they are going to use the old Christian "terminology" ("Heaven," "Salvation," "Christ," and the "New Birth"), without accepting the Christian meaning of those terms, we can well believe them. The Logical Positivists at Vienna went through this years ago, and they decided that words can mean ANYTHING or NOTHING, depending upon how they wish to be used; for example "Delousing Station," or "Shower Room" can mean "EXTERMINATION BY POISONOUS GAS." For example: "The Jewish Problem" can mean "Racial Genocide"; for example: "Integration" can mean "enforced racial mixing by armed troops"; for example: "Community sharing" can mean "confiscation of private property"; for example: "Environmental Ecology" can mean Federal confiscation of communications and industry. (See how it is done? You INVENT your own terminology to cover up SIN.)

But this is nothing new to those of us who have read the "creeds" being published by modern "Fundamental" Bible colleges and universities. We have seen this lying duplicity so many times in Christian circles that we are thoroughly adjusted to it. There are more than 45 Bible schools in America whose articles of faith state that they believe the Bible IS the word of God, and in the same paragraph they will confess that the Bible WAS the word of God. They will change the TENSE of a verb on you (while complaining about the translation of the aeorist and the imperfections in the AV(1611)!!) and go right on pretending that they believe what you and I believe. Well, some of us (and some of YOU) believe the Bible IS the word of God, and if you pin us to the mat like we pinned those lying scribes down, you won't get a recantation out of us; we have it--in our hands.

An "old timer" these days, remembers when "lights" (not people) were switched off-and-on, "rockets" were confined to the Fourth of July, only small boys feared the consequences of smoking, "to dig" meant to shovel dirt or sand, "neat" meant well organized or tidy, and a "pot" was something you cooked in. The real "old timers" remember when the idols were Maurice Chevalier, Clark Gable, Greta Garbo, L "Golden siCcircles meant well ors=example: "oys fand the used to repair their faces with, and a window sill had a flower box in it instead of an air-conditioner.
